More than a Fighter

Jung Chan-sung, widely known as the “Korean Zombie,” commands attention in the world of mixed martial arts. This moniker isn’t just a catchy name; it’s an homage to his relentless and indomitable spirit in the ring. No matter how tough the fight gets, he keeps fighting. Adding another layer to his multifaceted personality, Jung recently wowed fans by showcasing an entirely different skill—his vocal prowess—at a high-profile Korean event. This compelling blend of talents resonated with us at Untitled Mixed Media. Charged with bringing life to his cherished logo, we sought to infuse it with dynamism and build a storyline that mirrors his resilience and versatile nature.

Objectives:

  1. Craft a compelling narrative around the Korean Zombie’s logo.
  2. Produce high-quality animations that sync with the Korean Zombie’s singing.
  3. Engage the audience through captivating storytelling and visuals.

Elevating a Simple Animation to a Narrative Experience

Initially, the project appeared straightforward: animate the Korean Zombie’s logo mimicking his recent singing performance. While the performance itself was famous, simply recreating it would miss an opportunity to add layers of meaning and engagement.

Technical Obstacles
File Inadequacy:

We initially received a low-resolution JPEG of the logo. Without access to the original files, we had to recreate each component in Adobe Illustrator painstakingly.

Narrative Challenges
Story Gap:

The client’s initial concept was void of any storytelling elements. This absence risked producing an animation that might feel shallow and one-dimensional.

Insider Insight:

The logo featured the Korean Zombie holding his detached arm, an intriguing but unexplained detail. Understanding this could provide the audience with an insider’s perspective.

Creative Solution Proposed

We saw an opportunity to infuse the animation with a narrative layer that would captivate the audience. Inspired by the logo’s unique feature—the Korean Zombie holding his detached arm—we proposed a storyline where his arm falls off during the performance, but he continues to sing. This creative twist added depth and made the animation more engaging for a broader audience.

Transforming a Picture into a Performance

Strategy and Execution

We took a methodical and strategic approach when creating “Unstoppable Solo: The Korean Zombie’s Arm-Dropping Performance.” We began by creating all the necessary assets and followed a step-by-step development process to ensure a polished final product. Our focus on consistency and purposefulness carried through from the initial concept to the final optimized social media content.

Execution Outline

Asset Preparation: Setting the Foundation

  • Logo Reconstruction: Starting from a low-quality JPEG, the original logo was faithfully and meticulously recreated in Adobe Illustrator to ensure brand consistency throughout the animation.

Design & Asset Creation

  • Character Components: New art assets, including unique mouth shapes and specific body elements, were designed to breathe life into the character.
  • Scene Elements: Additional visual assets like background elements and interactive props were developed to enrich the setting.

Character Rigging

  • Facial and Body Rigging: Adobe After Effects helped to establish a flexible and expressive facial and body rig for the character, ensuring natural movements.

Core Animation & Supplementary Layers

  • Core Animation: Focused on capturing the pivotal moments in the plot, laying down the primary animations that drive the story forward.
  • Additional Layers: Subtle, complementary animations were layered on top of the core animation to add depth and fluidity to the narrative.

Authenticity & Real Movement

  • Accurate Movement Capture: Adobe After Effects was utilized to extract and incorporate authentic movements from the Korean Zombie’s original singing video, ensuring a genuine representation.

Audio Incorporation

  • Sound Design: Utilized Ableton Live to create a rich audio landscape, including background music and sound effects that enhance the mood and dynamics of the scene.

  • Audio Synchronization: Achieved seamless timing by meticulously syncing the audio elements with the visual animations, mainly focusing on the character’s mouth movements.

Scene Construction

  • Scene Layering: Elements were methodically layered to build the scene, introducing components in a paced manner to set the stage for the unfolding story effectively.

Storytelling

  • Comprehensive Story Arc: The animation was crafted using a structured storytelling approach to create a captivating narrative. The process includes key phases such as Ordinary World, Setback, Critical Choice, Reversal, and Resolution, providing entertainment and an emotional connection with the viewer.

Compelling Storytelling in Motion Graphics

When it comes to motion graphics, storytelling is a crucial component that can make or break a project. Our recent partnership with The Korean Zombie showcased the power of a well-crafted narrative. Through a structured five-part story, we were able to captivate our audience and create a visually stunning and cohesive experience.

While technical expertise and aesthetics are critical, the underlying story ties everything together and leaves a lasting impression. By incorporating storytelling, we offer more than just eye candy; we provide a meaningful and engaging experience that resonates with viewers.
